About the Event
Please note that a heat advisory has been issued for Friday, July 3rd. We are expecting extremely hot and humid conditions for this event. To avoid the worst of the heat, we have moved the count to begin earlier in the morning on Friday. New details:
NABA Butterfly Count
White House Farm, 1917 Kauffmans Mill Road, Luray
Friday, July 3rd
7:30 AM - 9:30 AM
(Participants are more than welcome to leave early as needed due to the heat.)
Even with the time adjustment, we expect temperatures to feel like 95 degrees by 9:30 on Friday. The count location is an open meadow without much shade, and there is no indoor space available. Please make sure to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen, and bring plenty of water to drink.
The meadow area has a significant tick population. We recommend wearing bug spray and long pants to reduce the risk of tick bites. Please also wear closed-toe walking or hiking shoes. Everyone should plan to conduct a tick check at home after the event.
Other than these essentials, you don't need any other supplies. However, if you have close-focusing binoculars, a camera with a zoom lens, or a butterfly field guide, feel free to bring them.
Please RSVP to receive detailed parking directions for this event.
Finally, you don't need any prior knowledge of butterfly identification to participate in the count. However, if you want to learn or refresh your knowledge, I recommend watching this webinar from our friends at the Prince William Conservation Alliance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YLtvgSwS30.
